My good friend David recently went to get some tattoo lettering done on his upper right arm. His story is pretty typical of those of us who get into tattooing. Back when we were just out of senior high, we went on this crazy tour of Asia and Europe – you know, the sort where some days you wake up in your hostel room not knowing how you got there or what you did last night, but knowing that it involved lots of booze and partying.
Well when we were in Taiwan, after a crazy night of partying one of us threw out a dare: let’s all get tattoos. You know, to symbolize our friendship and brotherhood and all. And so we did. After hunting Taipei for 2 hours for a tattoo artist open at 3 in the morning, we stumble across this small shop with an old Chinese man sitting on a wooden chair and the words “Tattoos” in neon lights hanging outside.
Inside, were all these tattoo flashes spread over the walls – kind of like an old 90s version of the tattoo websites you see nowadays like this one.
We walked in, and the old man got to work. It was sorta cool for kids our age – it felt like we were being initiated into the Chinese triad or something. Each of us was inked with a tattoo symbolizing a mythical animal that we felt connected to. Now I have to say, on our trip back home to the States we were all a bit on edge. Amongst all the good memories were lots of dangling questions – what would our parents think, what would our friends think, would this stop us from being admitted to college?
Fortunately, none of what we thought would happen came true. And all of us have really developed into tattoo enthusiasts now that we’re older.
One of the latest fads to hit the tattoo world is that of tattoo lettering – I won’t go into the extraneous detail here… very simply, it’s a form of tattooing that involves inking words on your skin rather than a pattern or image. In David’s case, he went with the Chinese character for dragon (‘long’ in Mandarin) on his upper arm, because it nicely complements the dragon he got on his back when we were in Taiwan.
